BASUG – Diaspora and Development

BASUG (www.basug.eu) is an active Diaspora organisation, registered in Bangladesh, Netherlands and Germany. The organisation is active in areas such as, migration & development, remittance, climate change and women empowerment. BASUG enjoys the Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nation. It has also two active Chapters-in U.K. and Italy; active since early 90s but was formalized in 2005 through registration with Dutch Chamber of Commerce. Although primarily focused on Bangladesh, Bangladeshi Diaspora in Netherlands and U.K, it has increasingly reached out to Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nepali Diaspora in other European countries and to Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. BASUG being active in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) leadership since 2007 and being one of its International Steering Committee members, plays an active role in the area of migration and development globally. BASUG aspires to create a gender-balanced society where women can enjoy equal rights with men; where migrants/diasporas are empowered, visible, heard and counted; a healthy society for children with all basic needs including education, health and sanitation; and where human rights are respected; strengthen the Diaspora advocacy movement to bring forward the migrant agenda, nationally and globally.
