KARMOJIBI NARI

Karmojibi Nari started its journey on the 1st of May, 1991 the International Labour day, thirty years ago, is still marching on the road to ensure women rights, dignity, power and authority. Over the years KN organized formal and informal sectors’ workers especially women workers. At the same time, KN tries to empower and strengthen the leadership capacity of the women workers and advocate with concerned authorities to harmonize the existing regulations, amend and/or enact new ones and effective implementation of the laws for the wellbeing of workers. 

 

The motto of Karmojibi Nari is to establish that `all women are working women’ have been fighting for women’s ‘identity as ‘working women’ and providing a ‘platform’ for promoting movement from the grassroots to the national level. The organization is just only a woman organization in the conventional sense; rather an organized platform of women workers striving to establish the rights, dignity and authority of women workers along with women and labourers. As a pioneer organization in Bangladesh, we are combatting relentlessly, advancing with success to liberate women movement from the aristocracy, upper-class domination and patriarchy, and activating labour movement with women workers’ agendas who are the vanguard for social changes in Bangladesh. 

 

Themes KN works on Gender, Worker’s Rights and Economic Justice among the districts of Dhaka, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Barguna, Bagerhat, Rajshahi, Manikgonj, Norshingdi, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Kushtia and Feni.

 

Favourable policies in place to secure women workers’ rights in the RMG sector, Labour Law 2006 and Rules 2015 formulated, the minimum wage in RMG sector declared and revised time to time though it is still insufficient, participatory Committee, OSH committee and Anti Sexual Harassment Committees formed in different textile and garment factories. Domestic worker policy was adopted in 2015 and Agriculture workers are recognized as `Worker’ in labour law amendment, in 2013 and Labour Policy, 2015 farm agriculture workers got the right to form a trade union. KN also supports different networks to intervene in the problems of disadvantaged and marginal people in depth. Such as Nari SramiK Kontho (the national platform of Women Workers’ Voice), Shamajik Protirodh Committee – SPC (Committee for Social Resistance), Sromik Nirapotta Forum-SNF (Worker’s Safety Forum), Human Rights Forum Bangladesh (HRFB), Citizens’ Initiative on CEDAW, Bangladesh, Domestic Workers Rights Network (DWRN), Democratic Budget Movement (DBM), Gender Platform Bangladesh (to Protect Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Bangladesh Civil Society for Migration (BCSM). Established active networking with international NGOs and networks including Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD), International Women’s Rights Action Watch (IWRAW) the Asia Pacific, Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women International Secretariat (GAATW-IS), Committee for Asian Women (CAW), Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA), South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) etc.
